Hemp Oil

The Hemp Product Cannabis Oil Explained

What is cannabis oil?

There are general confusion and uncertainty surrounding the purchase of cannabis oil online. Different websites talk about various oils originating from the hemp plant (also called the cannabis plant). For example, hemp oil, hemp seed oil, CBD oil, THC oil, cannabis oil, hash oil, marijuana oil, and Rick Simpson oil are all mentioned on the internet. So what exactly does and doesn’t constitute as cannabis oil? The following information should explain all you need to know to ensure you buy the correct kind of organic cannabis oil.

The term cannabis oil can be used to describe various hemp plant oils. It’s a generic term for different types of oils that are made from the cannabis plant and its subspecies. It is not, however, made from the seeds of the plant. The main difference between cannabis oils are the amount of cannabinoids they contain, the extraction method, the plant genus, and the parts of the plant which are used. The discussion around cannabinoids focuses on the psychoactive drugs tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the non-psychoactive substance cannabidiol (CBD). You can read more about cannabinoids found in the hemp plant in our overview of cannabinoids.

THC is responsible for the ‘high’ and ‘rush’ effect associated with cannabis, whereas CBD is the main non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the plant. Both substances have totally the opposite effect but they can improve your health when used together. From a medical perspective, it makes sense to keep the phytocannabinoid THC in the oil. However, this depends on the use and concentration of the oil. THC and CBD play an important role when buying organic cannabis oil. THC is illegal in many countries. Our CBD oil only contains the legal limit for THC (0.2% in Europe and 0.3% in North America).

What cannabis oil is not

As mentioned, cannabis oil doesn’t come from the seed of the hemp plant. Oil from the seeds is called hemp oil or hemp seed oil. Cannabis seeds don’t contain THC, but hemp seed oil can still contain traces of THC. Although hemp seed oil may contain some cannabinoids, they are unlikely to have an effect on the body as there is such a small amount. To put it simply cannabis oil is NOT the same as hemp seed oil.

What is hemp?

Hemp is made a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant specifically grown for industrial uses and products. Hemp is one of the first plants that was spun into a usable fiber over 10,000 years ago. It can be used to make a huge variety of items such as paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, insulation, biofuel, food, animal feed, and clothing. It can even be used to make jewelry! The hemp oil from the hemp plant can be used to make CBD oil.

What are the properties of hemp oil?

Hemp oil is known for being a good source of protein, essential fatty acids, and a number of amino acids. The oily seeds are full of fatty acids similar to naturally-occurring omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids found in the human body.

Uses of hemp oil

Hemp seed oil is typically used for cooking or as a diet supplement due to its high level of fatty acids. Take a tablespoon of pure hemp oil as a healthy dietary supplement. You can also mix it with your favourite foods, for example by adding a few tablespoons of oil to your smoothie or salads. Hemp oil can be mixed with many foods. However, it is best served cold. Heating hemp oil alters the beneficial fatty acids.

Hemp seed oil for the skin

Did you know you can also use hemp oil for your skin? Hemp seed oil can be described as a ‘dry’ oil as it is quickly absorbed by the skin. Whether you have dry or oily skin, hemp oil is a perfect product for you as it is suitable for all skin types. It has been widely reported to help eczema and other skin conditions such as acne. Apply it directly to the skin, or make your own ointment, lotion, or cream.

Hemp oil for hair

Hemp oil has many beneficial properties for hair. Its high concentration of fatty acids stimulates hair growth. Moreover, hair contains keratin, a substance which is 90% protein. Hemp oil, therefore, strengthens hair and helps to prevent breakages. As we mentioned earlier, hemp oil is easily absorbed by the scalp and hair. It is, therefore, an ideal moisturiser that doesn’t make your hair sticky and still leaves it soft and moisturised. We recommend using hemp oil as an intensive treatment. Apply it to your hair for a few hours or even overnight, wash it, and see for yourself the remarkable results.

The different varieties of cannabis oil

Hash Oil: What is hash exactly?

Let’s start with the basics – what exactly is hash or hashish? Hash or hashish is a resin made from parts of the female cannabis plant. The resin is pressed into slabs or blocks. The main part of the plant is the buds as they contain trichomes (plant hairs/glands). Trichomes are especially rich in cannabinoids and THC. Trichomes can also be called kief. The kief powder is then pressed into hashish.

Hashish is usually taken orally. It is smoked in pipes, bongs, or as a joint, or inhaled in vaporizers. It’s also used in food, for example, space cookies and space cakes. Hashish is a compressed resin that has a golden brown to black color, depending on the purity and plant genus. Hash has a higher THC concentration than unprocessed cannabis buds and contains less CBD than most CBD oils.

What are hash oil, hashish oil and THC oil?

Firstly, these definitions refer to the same thing. And, it is actually not a real oil. It is a so-called oleoresin, a semi-solid extract, consisting of the resin of cannabis plants and essential oils. Hash oil, hashish oil, or THC oil can be made from hash/hashish or marijuana (dried cannabis buds). Solvent extraction or pressing the buds between baking paper with a plant press are common methods to create these oils.

Before solvent extraction, the plant material is dried and heated (decarboxylated). Decarboxylation is important as it makes the cannabinoids (THC and CBD) more soluble. The solvent is filtered and evaporates, leaving a sticky, resinous liquid which has a strong herbal smell. When the pressing method is used, you see sticky-resinous extract leaking directly onto the baking paper. This end product is the hash/hashish oil. As it has a very high THC content it can also be called THC oil. It usually has between 10 – 30% THC. THC oils with a concentration up to 90% have existed since 2010.

Hash oil or hashish oil can be smoked, swallowed or vaporized (inhaled). Smoking or inhaling can also be called ‘dabbing’. THC is illegal in many countries due to its psychoactive effect. Therefore, the possession of THC oil can be prosecutable by law. Buy organic cannabis oil here to be sure you are purchasing a completely legal product.

Marijuana oil

Marijuana oil is simply a different definition for THC oil. However, it is made and extracted from marijuana (dried cannabis buds). Marijuana has the highest content of THC. Its oil is used primarily for medical and recreational purposes. Just like THC oil, marijuana oil is also illegal in many countries because of its high content of THC.

Rick Simpson Oil

Rick Simpson oil or RSO as it is commonly known, refers to an extremely potent decarboxylated extract which is made from a strong strain of sedative cannabis – Indica Genus. Indica Genus extract can have a THC content of up to 90%. This oil is said to have healing properties to help cancer sufferers. But who exactly is Rick Simpson?

Rick Simpson injured his head in 1997 while working. Following his accident, he suffered chronic pain and a constant ringing in his ears. No conventional medicine seemed to help so he took matters into his own hands and decided to take a THC-based substance. Despite his desire for an oil which doesn’t have to be smoked, doctors denied his request for prescribed marijuana on the basis that it would damage his lungs. Rick Simpson then decided to make his own oil. Much to his surprise, his homemade cannabis oil significantly reduced his symptoms, even allowing him to return to work.

In 2003, Rick Simpson was diagnosed with skin cancer. He remembered reading an old report that THC could shrink tumors. He applied his cannabis oil to the nodules on his skin, and covered them with a plaster. After just 4 days, the tumors had disappeared. Despite this success, no one seemed interested in the incredible results. He began to promote cannabis oil and its healing qualities to spread the message for the benefits of THC oil. He is now especially well known for his explanatory videos on Youtube. Unfortunately, his oil is not legally purchasable in many countries due to its high concentration of THC.

CBD oil

CBD oil doesn’t contain THC (it may contain traces up to the legal limit of 0.2% in Europe or 0.3% in North America). It can be called cannabis oil as the CBD ingredient is extracted from the cannabis plant rather than from hemp seeds. CBD oil is also made using plant stems as they contain hardly any THC. The CBD extraction uses industrial hemp. This fiber-rich hemp usually contains less THC than other cannabis genera.

CBD oil is often based on hemp seed oil. This may be confusing to you. All it means is that many producers add hemp extract with varying levels of CBD to hemp seed oil. For example, it is possible to have a concentration of 2.5%, 5% or 10%. As a result, the main ingredient is no longer cannabis oil, but hemp seed oil. Other producers also add CBD to coconut oil or other vegetable oils. CBD oils are legally available in many countries because of their low levels of THC. You can read more about the possible benefits of CBD oil in our detailed article on CBD oil. Read more information there before you buy organic cannabis oil on our website.

The potential health benefits of organic cannabis oil

Cannabis oil can be used to reduce stress, anxiety, and sleep problems

Chronic stress acts like a poison in the human body and massively reduce our quality of life. Nonetheless, it’s a condition that many of us will suffer at some point in our lives. We have great news for sufferers of chronic stress – cannabis oil could reduce stress and calm your mind. Cannabinoids have the ability to release hormones linked to enjoyment by activating certain receptors in the endocannabinoid system. Read more about the endocannabinoid system (ECS) on our CBD oil page.

A study in 2013 found that cannabinoids can regulate the emotional response to trauma after a distressing event. Cannabinoids found in cannabis oil are said to reduce the stress receptors in the amygdala (the core of the brain) and the hippocampus (supposed to be the center of emotions in our brains). The soothing effects of cannabis oil could help sufferers of insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness. Many other scientific reports also support these findings.

Cannabis oil and eating disorders

As cannabinoids can influence the hormonal balance in the body, cannabis oil can increase hunger and stimulate the digestive system. This effect could be especially useful for those who want to gain weight, for example after an illness. According to recent research conducted by Washington State University, cannabinoids release hormones that promote hunger. Normally, it is the neurons in the brain that release a hunger-suppressing and appetite-promoting hormone. Cannabis oil can stimulate or suppress appetite, depending which hormone is stimulated by cannabinoids. It could, therefore, help people with eating disorders or manage obesity in a natural way. More information about cannabinoids and appetite can be found here.

Cannabis oil and your eyes

Scientific research shows that organic cannabis oil could be used to naturally treat diseases of the retina (macular degeneration) and cataracts (glaucoma). Cataract disease affects the optic nerve and can lead to loss of vision and even blindness. It’s caused by a buildup of fluid in the eyes that pressurises the optic nerve, retina, and lens. Intraocular pressure can permanently damage the eye if it is left untreated

Although many factors contribute to damage of the optic nerve in glaucoma patients, the degree of intraocular pressure is clearly related. According the the American Glaucoma Society, cannabis has the ability to reduce intraocular pressure in both healthy-sighted individuals and glaucoma patients. It can be used to reduce the pressure in the eye for a short time. Therefore, you should take cannabis oil no more than every three hours. The benefits of cannabis oil for your eyes are still being researched. Care and attention should be used when taking cannabis oil for your eyes.

What are the soothing properties of cannabis oil?

Cannabis has been used to relieve pain for millennia. Scientific studies have shown that cannabinoids can reduce the feeling of pain by inhibiting neuronal transmission of pain. Cannabis oil could relieve chronic pain and inflammation, for example in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Organic oil can also be used to naturally treat fibromyalgia. Why not buy organic cannabis oil instead of traditional painkillers and experience the benefits for yourself

Cannabis oil for a healthy heart

Animal studies indicate the the antioxidant properties of cannabis oil may be good for the heart and prevent cardiovascular disease. A number of cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, strokes, arteriosclerosis, and heart attacks. The School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham first examined the effects of cannabis oil on cardiovascular diseases in 2014. Their results suggest that cannabinoids relax and dilate blood vessels. Cannabis oil could therefore be used as a natural therapeutic to lower blood pressure and promote blood circulation. However, more research needs to be done on the side-effects of cannabis oil

Can organic cannabis oil protect your skin?

When applied to the skin, cannabis oil can stimulate the removal of dead skin and promote a fresh and clear complexion. Cannabinoids can regulate skin problems such as dry skin or acne as they are responsible for the production of lipids. It can also help to fight free radicals due to its antioxidant properties, thus resulting in less cell damage. What could this mean for your skin? Slower aging, less dark skin and uneven patches, and fewer wrinkles could all be possible. Cannabis can minimise stress – one of the main causes of acne, eczema and rosacea. When you buy organic cannabis oil, don’t forget to use it on your skin.

Cannabis oil and cancer

Possible antitumor properties in cannabis oil

Every cell that grows and spreads in the body in an uncontrolled manner is diagnosed as cancer. The body has lost control of its own cell division. Various studies show that the human body may be able to overcome this loss of control with the help of cannabinoids. For example, research suggests that cannabinoids have the ability to stop the multiplication of cancer cells. Other studies have shown that cannabinoids can provoke cancer cells to kill themselves. Furthermore, they could prevent metastases. These factors all suggest that cannabis oil is likely to reduce the risk of cancer spreading in the body.

Chemotherapy and cannabis

The analgesic, nausea-reducing and, appetite-regulating properties of cannabis could potentially help ease the side-effects of chemotherapy. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects could help to reduce the inflammation caused by radiation attacking healthy cells during chemo. Organic cannabis oil could be a promising naturopathic treatment. Maybe you would like to buy organic cannabis oil before undergoing chemotherapy. Many people already doubt treating cancer with radiation. Read about the case of a 14-year-old girl below.

The case of a 14-year-old girl

In Canada in 2013, a case study evaluated the effects of cannabis oil on a 14-year-old-girl diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). She was subjected to all common cancer treatments such as a spine bone marrow transplantation, chemo, and radiation. After 34 months, she was incredibly ill, underweight, and weak. It was thought that all methods of treatment had been exhausted so she was put on a pain management programme and taken home. She was expected to die within a two months.

As a last resort, her family began to orally treat her with organic cannabis oil as they had learned about the potential antitumoral effect of cannabinoids. They mixed it with honey to cover the bitter taste of the cannabis oil. They began with a daily dose which was increased as soon as she became used to any side effects. After an initial phase of tiredness, anxiety, and increased appetite, her condition started to improve as the therapy progressed. She needed less morphine to relieve her pain, showed increased euphoria and alertness, and improved memory. She was treated with cannabis oil from various strains to increase the effectiveness for 65 days.

The result of the case study

Unfortunately, after 78 days, the girl tragically died of gastrointestinal bleeding and intestinal perforation. It was noted that chemotherapy, which could not control the cancer cells in the blood and bone marrow, had had a devastating effect on her health which ultimately led to her death. However, the treatment with organic cannabis oil had no toxic side effects, only psychosomatic. Treatment with organic cannabis oil has been shown to reduce the toxic and side-effects of chemotherapy as a result of this case study. It has great potential to fight cancer cells.

To counter the possible psychoactive effect of cannabis oil, non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) could be used. Cannabis oil in the form of CBD oil could be a promising therapeutic substance. Learn more about the effect of CBD oil here. Further studies on cancer and cannabis can be found here.

The legality of cannabis oil

It is important to pay attention that the organic cannabis oil you buy is completely legal. There are certain internet shops that also offer prohibited products. All cannabis oils containing THC levels above 0,2% (in Europe) or 0,3% (in North America) are as THC is a banned substance. Hash/hashish oil, THC oil, marijuana oil, and Rick Simpson oil all contained illegal levels of THC. The only legal oil that contains cannabinoids and is permitted to be sold as a dietary supplement (not as a medicine) is CBD oil. CBD oil is often called hemp oil with CBD. Cannabidiol (CBD) is not legally considered a drug. You can buy, import, and consume organic cannabis oil legally. Buy cannabis oil here.

Cannabis oil is a natural product

The cannabis plant is very robust. Its cultivation doesn’t require toxic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. The production of cannabis oil can be done very gently and naturally, as carbon dioxide can be used to create a solvent which is completely free from residue. No hemp extract then remains.

From organic farming to production, the creation of cannabis oil makes a product that is as close to the natural plant as possible. No fabrics are added or removed. Together with a high-quality and old-pressed hemp seed oil or coconut oil, it is lends itself to use as a medicine. It is completely natural and organic. Organic cannabis oil is always preferable to medicinal cannabis used in the pharmaceutical industry which uses synthetic cannabinoids and other ingredients.

Top tip: When buying cannabis oil, opt for an oil which is created through organic farming and CO2 extraction or oil extraction. Your pet can also benefit from CBD oil. Read more on CBD oil for animals.
